Out & About: Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey)
Discover the real Downton Abbey with a visit to Highclere Castle
Just 8 minutes from The Yew Tree, Highclere Castle is one of the most beautiful Victorian castles in England. Set amidst 1,000 acres of spectacular sweeping parkland, the dramatic scenery and ornate state rooms make Highclere a marvel to behold.
The castle has belonged to the Carnarvon family since 1679 and has garnered fame as the set of a host of films and TV series, most recently the award-winning British period drama Downton Abbey. Here you can walk in the footsteps of the glamorous cast and enjoy discovering the history of the real Lady Almina, the true lady of the house. It was the 5th Earl of Carnarvon who famously discovered the Tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922, and history lovers will also enjoy the Egyptian Exihibition on show at the Castle.
Whether a romantic stroll through the grounds or a family day out, Highclere Castle makes an ideal day trip during your stay with us at The Yew Tree.
Please note that the castle is only open to the public at certain times of the year. For more information please visit the Highclere Castle website.
